You're a Grand Old Flag!

So the 4th of July, our Independence Day, is just around the corner...2 days!! Anyway, it seems that everyone is saying "oh how this one has meaning" and all that kind of stuff. What I want to know is...does it really take something as horrible as death and war to give our nation's birthday meaning? That's really sad. I know I've always been attached to patriotism and the flag. Just something about it has always drawn me to it. I mean the history behind everything...all in a little over 200 years!! A lot of countries have been around for a lot longer and perhaps don't have as rich of a history.

As for me, my love of the flag came from when I was a little girl. I've always been in charge of keeping track of the national holidays so we could put our big US flag out front on the flag pole (well now we use the basketball pole but it works:)). Anyway, every national holiday I'd go out with my dad to put the flag up. However, before putting the flag up we have a ritual of singing "You're a Grand Old Flag" and marching around the driveway. The funny part is how we needed to learn the words...of course I was 4 and my dad was well a lot older...but still it was a good time. I guess stemming from that I've always had a fascination with the flag. So much stands behind just that piece of fabric...but I suppose for some people they can't think that abstractly. They need reality to see the flag's true colors. Well I hope that those people don't need any more reminders how precious our flag is as well as our country. I bleed blue and white for penn state but add the red for my country:)

Here's the song I've grown to sing and love:

You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.

You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.

Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Sad to say but yes, it does take a tragedy like 9-11 to wake us up and give this holiday meaning. Just last summer, only months before, we were constantly talking about Gary Condit/Chandra Levy, we were talking budget woes, political ammorality, and other things. As a media swamped people we're normally overloaded with information and opinions day in and day out, so its little wonder why we get so emotionally or patriotically numb. :(

However, it's nice to see someone's patriotic ideals are still strong. You go girl!
